Jeff Kinney Author Profile

Every “tween” who has ever adored and followed the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series and its movie adaptations probably exploded with overwhelming bliss as National Book Store announced Jeff Kinney’s book signing event of his 11th book in the series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down, happening this coming December 11th.  However, we are certain that there are some of you who are still wondering whether or not Jeff Kinney, the bestselling author and six-time Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award winner for Favorite Book, is the perfect guy to tickle your funny bones – that’s why we’re giving you the top 3 facts about him to help you decide!

He always dreamed of being a cartoonist

Jeff Kinney discovered his passion for drawing cartoons back in the early 90s when he created a comic strip called “Igdoof” which regularly appeared in the campus newspaper, Diamondback, at the university he attended. When he graduated from college, he tried to get his comic strip syndicated in different publications, which as fate has it, proved to be unsuccessful. However, these setbacks never put him down. Instead, what can be seen as failure to some, paved the way to truly find his calling and create an ultimate success – although he still didn’t know it at that time. A failed cartoonist turned children’s illustrated book author – it’s really up to you to turn yourself into someone greater than you ever imagined, agree?

Success didn’t come overnight, but more or less six years

When he first thought of creating Diary of a Wimpy Kid in 1998, he had clear goals of turning it into a book one day. Six years after its initial conception and working hard on it, he published the first online version on Funbrain.com, came out fresh and consumed daily by some 70,000 kids per day – which evidently, quickly gained traction over the years and eventually became a hit! Patience and commitment are key! So no one should stop dreaming and working hard for it!

In 2007, the first book Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid print series was published which brought its fandom rushing to the bookstores in droves to snatch an illustrated copy for themselves. More than 100,000 copies were sold in United States alone in the first year.

His creations weren’t targeted at kids – at first

When Jeff Kinney started writing books, he didn’t have kids in mind reading his works. In fact, he wasn’t really aiming at attracting a particular age range but simply said that “I feel like what I should do is write what I would like or maybe what my younger self might have liked and try to hope kids will kind of find me there and appreciate what I’ve written”. He expressed that he always had a kid’s sensibilities, which probably made him more relatable and effective in bringing his message across to kids because he is a kid at heart.

As he wrote the series, he really tried to remember what it was like being kid, get into that mindset and come up with something witty and original told from Greg’s, the main character and narrator, perspective. Now after being named as one of Time Magazine’s most influential people, he feels so honored and proud to have reached millions of kids worldwide and turn them on to reading with his hilarious website and books.
