Natalie C. Parker is the author of the Beware the Wild duology and the editor of Three Sides of a Heart. We chatted with her to learn more about her latest book, Seafire.

Give us five facts about yourself off the top of your head.

1. I’m a Sagittarius.
2. I’m slightly obsessed with cotton candy. Disney World has the best cotton candy. I am willing to be proven wrong on this. But only with copious taste tests.
3. I’m a SCUBA diver.
4. My dog is an awesome little monster, but I think I’m a cat person
5. Definitely wanted to be Wonder Woman when I grew up. (Still kinda do).

You have a master’s degree in gender studies. What impact does it have on your storytelling?

I think in the case of Seafire having a background in gender studies inspired me to write a story that challenges some of the gender assumptions I think are the most harmful to girls and boys. Like the idea that girls in a group will always find themselves in competition with one another. I call foul! And I wrote Seafire partly to combat that very idea.

Your newest book Seafire tells the story of the Mors Navis, an all-female group of pirates who seek to take down a corrupt warlord. Where did you get the inspiration for this trilogy?

About a year before I started writing Seafire, I saw Mad Max: Fury Road and fell instantly and surprisingly in love. We have several amazing women action heroes, but I don’t think I’d ever seen a story like that with a group of women taking center stage. I wanted more of that, both from myself and other creators.

What should your readers know before reading Seafire?

Sisterhood is survival! But seriously, this is an epic adventure with a group of girls just like you (or just like girls you know) at the center of things.

If you could cast a movie adaptation of Seafire, who would you choose to play Captain Caledonia Styx? Which actresses would you love to be part of the Mors Navis?

I would love to see Sophia Lillis portray Caledonia on the big screen. I’d also love to see Lana Condor in the role of Hime and Kaitlyn Mesh would make a great Lace!

How far along are you in writing the next two books in the trilogy?

The second book is nearly finished and will introduce a bunch of new characters and facets of the world. I’ll start to work on book three in the coming months!

What do you hope would be the biggest takeaway of your readers from this series?

I hope readers walk away inspired to imagine even bigger and bolder things and adventures for the girls of our own world.

Have you heard from your Filipino fans online?

Yes! Thank you so much for all the love you’ve given to Seafire and the crew. Hearing from you always brightens my day!

Would you consider visiting the Philippines for a book signing soon?

Absolutely! I would love to come see your country and meet readers.

Do you have a message to your Filipino readers?

I am so excited for you to meet the crew of the Mors Navis!
