Happy women’s day! It’s time to celebrate the best of womanhood and femininity with some great reads. Find inspiration from strong, smart, and sassy female characters that every woman should read about.

Elphaba, Wicked

Her skin being a nice shade of green isn’t the only thing to admire about this wicked witch – she’s strong-willed, opinionated, and stands up for what she thinks is right. She’s proof that even if you’re totally different and unique, you can still succeed. But more importantly, she shows us that success is something worth sacrificing for something you truly believe in.

Read her story in The Wicked Years by Gregory Maguire. Order yours here.

Eowyn, The Lord of the Rings

No one will argue that the highly acclaimed Lord of the Rings books are in need of a few more female characters to balance out all the testosterone. However, Eowyn stands proud among all of the men (and hobbits), having headed straight into battle and slaying the supposedly immortal Witch – king. As she aptly put it, she is no man – and that in itself is her very strength.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you must have known the ineffable muggle-born from Gryffindor. Smart is an understatement to describe her, and she’s shown little (and not-so-little) girls everywhere that there’s nothing to be ashamed of in being a nerd.

Jane Eyre, Jane Eyre

In an era dominated by men, Jane Eyre defied convention as an independent and strong-willed feminist. She pushed boundaries and explored sexuality, love, and morality way ahead of her time.

Katniss Everdeen, Hunger Games

Katniss Everdeen, Hunger Games

Beyond being a star-crossed lover, Katniss Everdeen was – and still is – the girl on fire. She survived two rounds in the dreaded arena, outsmarted the Gamemakers, led a revolution, and overthrew the Capitol. Sure, she gushed over Gale and / or Peeta a couple of times, but that doesn’t outshine her grit and passion.

Lisbeth Salander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The so-called ‘feminist avenging angel’, Lisbeth Salander, has a rough exterior hiding an even rougher, darker interior. She’s fierce and independent. And even though she can be quite brutal with her ways, you can’t deny that she gets the job done.
